TikTok Launches Must Eat: An In-App Restaurant Guide Built From 40M Posts

TikTok's new Must Eat guide ranks restaurants in New York, Los Angeles and the Bay Area using community posts, reviews and comments. Here's how it works, what it means for food creators, and how to get your videos in front of it.

One-minute explainer: how TikTok's Must Eat guide works

What TikTok announced

On October 29, 2026, TikTok introduced Must Eat, a restaurant guide that lives inside the TikTok app. It launches first in the areas around New York City, Los Angeles and the Bay Area, and it is part of TikTok GO, the feature that links what you see on TikTok to real places you can visit or book.

The pitch is simple. Instead of saving a food video and forgetting the name of the place, you can now browse a ranked list of restaurants that TikTok's food community already talks about.

How the Must Eat guide works

  • Two lists per city. Everyday Eats covers casual favorites. Elevated Dining covers places for a celebration or a night out.
  • Filters. Browse by city and filter by cuisine, price, score and location.
  • Restaurant pages. Each spot has neighborhood details, a price range, the reasons it is recommended and the TikToks posted about it.
  • Booking through OpenTable. Select restaurants can be booked from inside the TikTok app.
  • Your own list. Save restaurants to your existing TikTok collections.

You can reach Must Eat from the search bar, the Local feed, place pages, and the location tags on videos tied to restaurants on the list.

How restaurants get on the list

TikTok says the guide is built from more than 40 million posts, reviews and comments shared on the platform. According to TikTok, independent restaurants and local specialties get priority, and no restaurant can pay to be featured. Before a list goes live, TikTok says it checks that each business is open, operating and in good standing.

The numbers behind it

TikTok shared these figures with the launch:

| What TikTok reported | Figure |

|---|---|

| Americans who visited an independent restaurant, cafe or shop for the first time last year after finding it on TikTok | 27 million |

| Estimated local spending from those visits | $4.7 billion |

| Americans who chose a local restaurant over a national chain because of TikTok | 13 million+ |

| Posts, reviews and comments the guide is built from | 40 million+ |

These are TikTok's own estimates, not independent research.

What it means for food creators

This is our take, not TikTok guidance. Must Eat turns food videos into something closer to search results. Every restaurant page shows the TikToks posted about that place, and the guide also appears through the location tags on videos.

That makes a few habits worth building now:

  • Always tag the location on restaurant videos. It is one of the ways people reach Must Eat, and it ties your post to the right restaurant.
  • Say the restaurant name and the dish early. Viewers browsing a restaurant page want to know in the first seconds what you ordered and whether it was worth it.
  • Think in categories. A quick lunch spot is an Everyday Eats video. A tasting menu is an Elevated Dining video. Framing your review the same way tells viewers right away which kind of place it is.
